More than 1,000 people participated in this year’s 13 Bridges Challenge, smashing last year’s number by more than 350 and raising more than £125,000 pounds for SSAFA. The first walkers set off from Trinity Square Gardens at 8am on Saturday, and over the next several hours they all snaked their way through Central London and across the city’s most iconic bridges. The 10-mile route took most participants around four hours to complete, offering stunning views of the UK capital. One participant was Miah West, 18, from Gravesend, Kent. In WW2 the British created the National Pigeon Service and enlisted over 250,000 pigeons to serve during the war. Some pigeons were highly decorated for their service. One such bird, a pigeon named G.I. Joe, saved the lives of British soldiers in the Italian village of Calvi Vecchia by delivering a message that prevented a bombing run by allied planes. The Dickin Medal, often referred to as the animal Victoria Cross, was awarded to 32 pigeons for their service during the war, recognizing their bravery and the lives they saved. A variety of services made use of Pigeons during the war, including the intelligence services, Army, RAF, Police and Fire Service. The National Pigeon Service (NPS) was a volunteer civilian organization formed in Britain in 1938 as result of representations made to the Committee of Imperial Defence and the British Government by Major W. Their service as battlefield messengers is their most known use, and the pigeons found homes in every branch of service. The rudimentary airplanes of the embattled countries used pigeons to provide updates midair. Launched mid-mission, the birds would fly back to their coops and update ground commanders on what the pilots had observed. Quick updates like this were essential for leaders to know what the battlefield looked like and what the enemy was doing in its own trenches. Tanks carried the birds in order to relay the advance of individual units. Even after the introduction of the radio, pigeons were often the easiest way to help coordinate tank units without exposing the men to dangerous fire. Without a radio set, the soldiers would have had to leave the relative safety of their tanks to relay or receive orders.
