🇦🇺WWII uncovered: Sergeant Leonard Victor Waters of the Royal Australian Air Force:

"Sergeant Len Waters, 78 Squadron RAAF, was one of a small number of Aboriginal pilots known to have served in the Second World War. He joined the RAAF on 24 August 1942 and was trained as a flight mechanic.

When the RAAF called for aircrew trainees he applied and was accepted for pilot training." - Australian War Memorial

"Len undertook his initial training at 1 Elementary Flying Training School (1EFTS), Narrandera, NSW, before graduating as a Sergeant Pilot from 5 Service Flying Training School (5SFTS), Uranquinty, NSW.

His training continued at 2 Operational Training Unit (2OTU), Mildura, Victoria from where he was posted to 78 Squadron on 14 November 1944.

He flew 95 operational sorties with 78 Squadron, operating from Noemfoor, Morotai and Tarakan. Waters' engagements included the New Britain, New Guinea and the Borneo Campaigns." - Australian War Memorial

Sergeant Waters was promoted to Flight Sergeant on 1 January 1945 and to Warrant Officer on 1 January 1946. He was discharged from the RAAF on 18 January 1946.

Len was the recipient of the Australian Service Medal, Pacific Star, 1939-45 Star, British War Medal and Dutch War Commemorative Cross.

After the war Len married Gladys Saunders, a Women’s National Emergency League driver for the United States Army. Gladys and Len were married for 46 years and had six children.

Warrant Officer Leonard Victor Waters passed away on August 24, 1993 at the age of 69 years old.

In 2011, the Sutherland Shire Council recognized Len Waters' memory and achievements by dedicating Len Waters Park, with a memorial plinth and plaque, at Timbrey Circuit, Barden Ridge, New South Wales.

The teenager got into difficulties at Lodge Farm Reservoir in Netherton, Dudley, on Tuesday evening His body was recovered from the water the next day by police divers.
