Derrick Todd Lee would often pose as a stranger in need to earn his victims' trust — and access to their homes — before attacking them.
Some rumors even claimed that he would play the sounds of a crying infant on tape to lure his victims to the door, but police denied this story.
For years, authorities struggled to identify the "Baton Rouge Serial Killer" as Lee's rampage continued.
But then, on July 9, 2002, Lee arrived at the home of Dianne Alexander, asking if he could use her telephone.
As she opened the door, Lee attacked. As he beat and tried to rape Alexander, her son suddenly arrived home and chased him away from the property, averting another tragedy — and allowing Alexander to describe him to the police.
With Alexander's description and a growing collection of DNA evidence, time was running out for Derrick Todd Lee.
