Michael James Perry was executed by lethal injection in the Walls Unit at Huntsville, Texas at 6pm. on the evening of Thursday July 1st, 2010 for the murder of 50 year old nurse, Sandra Stotler, at her home near Houston nine years earlier on October 24th, 2001 and stealing her red Chevrolet Camaro convertible.
Perry had shot Sandra Stotler twice in the back with a 12 gauge shotgun, stolen her car and then, along with Jason Burkett, dumped her body in Montgomery County’s Crater Lake. They then returned to Stotler's Lake Conroe home to wait for her son, Adam Stotler.
Prosecutors said Perry and Burkett lured Adam Stotler, 16, and his friend Jeremy Richardson, 18, to a nearby wooded area, shot them dead and stole Adam Stotler's Isuzu Rodeo SUV.
On Tuesday morning, October 30, 2001, a Montgomery County Sheriff’s corporal found Perry, Burkett, and another man in the stolen white Isuzu Rodeo at a truck stop.
The vehicle hit the corporal in the course of fleeing, but the officer managed to shoot out the back passenger tire. The vehicle crashed into a nearby store.
Perry and Burkett, toting a shotgun, climbed a fence and ran to a nearby apartment complex where police arrested them. A detective took a statement from Perry in which he admitted to the crime.
On February 24th, 2003 Perry was convicted of Sandra Stotler’s murder and sentenced to death four days later. Jason Burkett was given a life sentence for his role in the deaths.
Perry’s final meal was three bacon, egg and cheese omelettes. In addition three chicken cheese enchiladas and 3 each of Pepsi, Coke and Dr. Pepper.
Perry, 28, mouthed to relatives and friends watching through a window that he loved them.
"I want to start off to everyone involved in this atrocity, they're all forgiven by me," he said in a brief statement from the death chamber gurney.
He lifted his head from the pillow and, his voice cracking, cried out: "Mom, I love you."
"I'm coming home, Dad. I'm coming home," he added. His father died last month.
Sandra Stotler's mother and daughter and Jeremy Richardson's brother attended Perry's execution and watched it from a viewing room. Perry never acknowledged them.
As the drugs took effect, a single tear ran down his right cheek, prompting quiet sobs from his mother and an aunt and friends.
He was pronounced dead at 6:17 p.m., the 14th prisoner executed during 2010 in Texas, the nation's most active death penalty state.
About 90 minutes earlier, the U.S. Supreme Court had rejected a last-day appeal from Perry's lawyers.
Perry is the subject of the 2011 Werner Herzog documentary “Into the Abyss.”
