๐บ๐ฒ WW II uncovered US Navy: Tony Curtis Veteran of the Pacific Theater.
Born Bernard Schwartz, on June 3, 1925 in Manhattan, New York - Tony Curtis was a first generation American son of Hungarian Jewish immigrants. He began an interest in acting during his time at Seward Park High School in New York City. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Tony Curtis enlisted with the US Navy, serving on the USS Proteus (AS-19) with the rank of Signalman Third Class.
According to the National World War II Museum: "Inspired by films glorifying submarine service, Curtis applied for sub school. He was accepted, but was assigned to a sub tender, the USS Proteus (AS-19) instead of a submarine. The Proteus was stationed in Guam, where Curtis also worked as part of a relief crew readying the USS Dragonet (SS-293) to return to sea. Through binoculars, the future star watched in Tokyo Bay as the peace treaty was signed aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945."
"Following his discharge from the Navy, Curtis attended City College of New York on the G.I. Bill. He then studied acting at The New School in Greenwich Village under stage director Erwin Piscator. His contemporaries included fellow World War II veterans Harry Belafonte, Walter Matthau, Beatrice Arthur, and Rod Steiger."
In 1949 Tony got his first break being cast in a small part in the film "Sierra" - starring World War II legend Audie Murphy. In 1950 he was cast in "Winchester '73" alongside another decorated veteran - International star Jimmy Stewart.
In 1951 Curtis received top billing in the Universal Pictures film "The Prince Who Was a Thief" and in 1953 he would co-star with his future wife Janet Leigh in "Houdini" in which he would play the title role. He would go on to star with US Navy alumnus Kirk Douglas in the 1958 production "The Vikings." In the same year he would give an Oscar nominating performance for his role in "The Defiant Ones" starring opposite Sidney Poitier. In 1959 came the International hit comedy "Some Like it Hot" with co-stars Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe.
Tony Curtis would go on to star in a multitude of television shows and films throughout the years in a career that spanned over six decades. With numerous Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA - and various other - awards and nominations Curtis proved to be one of the most bankable actors of his time.
Signalman Third Class Tony Curtis passed away on September 29, 2010 at the age of 85. He lies in rest at Palm Memorial Park in Las Vegas Nevada. Lest We Forget.
