In the early morning hours of November 15, 2004, Christopher Porco crept into his parents' bedroom in Bethlehem, New York and suddenly began butchering them with a fireman's ax before fleeing the scene.
His mother Joan lost her left eye and part of her skull yet lived, and she lay bleeding in bed for hours before police arrived. Meanwhile, Christopher struck his father Peter 16 times in the head, penetrating his skull and taking off part of his jaw.
But the attack didn't kill Peter immediately — and the resulting crime scene later revealed a gruesome picture of his morning.
The brain damage that Peter sustained caused him to go into a macabre daze once he was somehow able to wake up after his son had fled.
He then simply went about his morning routine in a sleepwalking-like state as if nothing was wrong. A trail of blood showed that he got out of bed, walked into the bathroom and stood at the sink, then made his way into the kitchen.
There, he tried to unload the dishwasher, packed his lunch, and even wrote a check to pay Christopher's recent parking ticket.
Peter then went outside to get the newspaper, accidentally locked himself out of the house, and had the presence of mind to use the spare key to get back in before finally collapsing on the floor of the foyer and succumbing to his injuries.
