NANKING FALLS TO JAPANESE CENTRAL CHINA AREA ARMY, December 13, 1937.

NANKING FALLS TO JAPANESE CENTRAL CHINA AREA ARMY, December 13, 1937. The first Japanese air raids against Nanking took place in August 1937.  Following the Japanese breakout from Shanghai in November 1937, Japanese forces raced up the Yangtze valley against minimal opposition from the routed and panic-stricken Chinese forces.  On the recommendation of their German advisors, the Chinese had spent over a million yuan to establish a line of fortifications in the Yangtze Valley inland of Shanghai ("the Far Eastern Hindenburg Line") to hold up a Japanese advance into the heart of China, but this was abandoned without a fight. By 3 December the Japanese had seized Tanyang, just fifty miles from the capital.  The Chinese defense lines were established too close to the city and the Japanese were within artillery range of the city before they even came in contact with the defenses.  On 6 December the main infantry assault commenced from the east and south, and took just five...

Imperial Japanese Army officer Captain Toshiaki Mukai stands among the bodies of Chinese civilians during the infamous “Rape of Nanking.” 1937.

Imperial Japanese Army officer Captain Toshiaki Mukai stands among the bodies of Chinese civilians during the infamous “Rape of Nanking.” 1937.  Toshiaki Mukai and Tsuyoshi Noda, both captains in the Imperial Japanese Army had a contest to kill 100 people using a sword.  The goal of the contest was to see who could kill 100 people the fastest while using a sword.  The two officers were later executed on war crime charges for their involvement.  It is estimated the two officers did not stop at 100, and have killed as many as 300 defenseless men, women, and children for sport.  Don't forget to leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

From 1992 to 2003, a vicious rapist and killer terrorized Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

From 1992 to 2003, a vicious rapist and killer terrorized Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  Derrick Todd Lee would often pose as a stranger in need to earn his victims' trust — and access to their homes — before attacking them.  Some rumors even claimed that he would play the sounds of a crying infant on tape to lure his victims to the door, but police denied this story.  For years, authorities struggled to identify the "Baton Rouge Serial Killer" as Lee's rampage continued.  But then, on July 9, 2002, Lee arrived at the home of Dianne Alexander, asking if he could use her telephone.  As she opened the door, Lee attacked. As he beat and tried to rape Alexander, her son suddenly arrived home and chased him away from the property, averting another tragedy — and allowing Alexander to describe him to the police.  With Alexander's description and a growing collection of DNA evidence, time was running out for Derrick Todd Lee.  Don't forget to leave your thoughts in ...

MANILA MASSACRE, 1945.

MANILA MASSACRE, 1945 The Manila massacre involved atrocities committed against Filipino civilians in the city of Manila, Philippines by Japanese troops during the World War II Battle of Manila (1945).  The Manila massacre was one of several major war crimes committed by the Imperial Japanese Army, as judged by the postwar military tribunal.  The Japanese commanding general, Tomoyuki Yamashita, and his chief of staff Akira MutĹŤ, were held responsible for the massacre and other war crimes in a trial in late 1945 in Manila. Yamashita was executed on 23 February 1946 and Muto on 23 December 1948. . Prior to the battle, deciding that he would be unable to defend Manila with the forces available to him, and to preserve as large a force as possible to continue defensive operations in the rural mountain Luzon region of the Philippines, General Tomoyuki Yamashita had insisted on a complete withdrawal of Japanese troops from Manila in January, 1945.  However, this order was not re...

RICHARD SPECK AND THE STUDENT NURSE MURDERS

RICHARD SPECK AND THE STUDENT NURSE MURDERS Although this-chilling crime was committed in Chicago, its far-reaching impact was felt most profoundly in the Philippines,  as the sole survivor—and witness of this killing spree—was a Filipina exchange student nurse, Corazon Amurao of Batangas. Richard Benjamin Speck, a 25-year-old drifter and drunkard with many criminal records, had gone to Chicago to look for a job.  Unsuccessful in his search, Speck spent his idle days drinking, before  accosting and raping Ella Mae Hooper, whose gun he also took. At about 11 p.m. on July 13, 1966, Speck slipped into a nurses’ apartment house and knocked on the bedroom door of Amurao.   Armed with  a gun, Speck herded eight student nurses in a room—including Filipinas Merlita Gargullo and Valentina Pasion—and tied them. Speck then took them out one by one, and proceeded to rape and kill them by stabbing and strangulation Amurao escaped death by hiding under a bed.  Seven...

**Did You Know ? . . . . . February 1945: The Ra*pe of Manila.**

**Did You Know ?  . . . . . February 1945: The Ra*pe of Manila.** The devastation of Manila was one of the great tragedies of World War II.  Seventy percent of the utilities, 72 percent of the factories, 80 percent of the southern residential district, and 100 percent of the business district were razed…Hospitals were set afire after their patients had been strapped to their beds.   The corpses of males were mutilated, females of all ages were raped before they were slain, and babies’ eyeballs gouged out and smeared on walls like jelly.” A Chronology of bloody events as they unfolded helps to remind us that war is hell, through which Manila agonized. Feb. 1, 1945: “Roll out the barrel, Santa Clause is coming,” is the note wrapped in goggles dropped by a plane to starving Allied countries’ civilians interned at the University of Santo Tomas (UST). Feb. 3: American troops arriving from Lingayen liberate the 3,700 interns at UST. Japanese troops commence burning buildin...
